National Field Assembles for Whitsundays Short Story Award

A near-record field of writers from across the country has entered this year’s Whitsundays Literary Heart Award Short Story competition, cementing the region’s growing reputation on the national literary scene.

The 2026 competition attracted 96 entries across the Open Age and Under 18 divisions, with unpublished stories submitted by writers from across Australia spanning crime, romance, speculative fiction, historical fiction, contemporary drama, and humour.

Common threads ran through many of the entries, with themes of family, identity, belonging, resilience, loss and adventure, several drawing directly on regional communities and the Australian landscape.

Festival Director Richard Evans said the size and quality of the field marked a significant milestone for the young competition.

“Receiving almost 100 short stories from across Australia is a significant milestone for the Awards,” he said. “It tells us writers are recognising the Whitsundays as a place that values great storytelling and is committed to celebrating new and established voices alike.”

The Under 18 division, Richard said, is a deliberate investment in the next generation of Australian writers.

“Every accomplished author was once a young writer looking for encouragement,” he said. “We hope the Awards continue to inspire the next generation of Australian authors.”

Judging is now underway, with entries assessed against a consistent set of criteria of originality, storytelling, character development, technical craft, and overall impact. Regardless of genre.

“Whether a story is literary fiction, a thriller, a romance or speculative fiction, the question remains the same: how successfully does it achieve what it sets out to do?” Richard said. “Every entry deserves to be read with fresh eyes and assessed against the same high standards.”

A longlist will be released in the coming weeks, followed by a shortlist on Monday 17 August. Winners and runners-up in both divisions will be announced at the Whitsundays Writers Festival on Sunday 13 September, with a prize pool of $1,500 on offer in each category.
